NMI Tools - National Metering Identifier

Last Updated: 2026-09-18

Your NMI (National Metering Identifier) names one Electricity Connection to a Property. AEMO (the Australian Energy Market Operator) issues it, and your Electricity Bill prints it, usually near your Supply Address or your Meter Details. A complete NMI has 11 Characters. The first 10 Characters identify the Connection Point, and a Checksum Calculation derives the 11th Check Digit from those 10.

One Property can hold several Connections - one for the Main House, one for a Granny Flat - and one Connection can carry several Meters, such as a Main Meter and a Controlled Load Meter for a Hot Water Service. The NMI belongs to the Connection Point itself.

Tools for managing your Electricity Connection (using your NMI)

NMI Checksum Digit Calculator

Check that your NMI is valid and reveal the Missing 11th Check Digit if required, allowing you to: Accurately Identify your Electricity Connection on Paperwork; Access Smart Meter Data from Web Portals; Apply for Pre-Approval for Solar Power and/or a Battery.

Lookup DNSP by NMI Tool

Lookup Contact Details for your Electricity DNSP using your NMI. Your DNSP (Distribution Network Service Provider) owns and operates the Poles & Wires of the local Electricity Network. Contact your DNSP to access Smart Meter Data or Check Updates on Network Outages.

A second NMI Tool lives with the DNSP Lookup Tools. The Lookup DNSP by NMI Tool reads your NMI and names the Electricity Distributor that operates the Poles and Wires at that Connection. It sits beside the Postcode Tool and the Suburb Tool on Lookup your DNSP ...

Which Tool do I need ?

NMI Checksum Digit Calculator - Type the first 10 Characters of your NMI. The Tool runs the Checksum Calculation and shows you the 11th Check Digit. It also tells you whether an NMI you already hold passes that Check. Use it when a Web Portal, a Retailer or a Distributor asks for all 11 Characters and your Bill shows only 10.

Lookup DNSP by NMI Tool - Type the first 10 Characters of your NMI. The Tool names your Electricity Distributor (your DNSP - Distribution Network Service Provider) and lists their Contact Details, including the 24/7 Faults & Outages Number. Use it when you need to know which Network your Connection sits on.

Use Cases

Where is my NMI on my Bill ?

Most Australian Electricity Bills print the NMI near the Supply Address or near the Meter Details. Some Bills label it "NMI", and some spell out "National Metering Identifier". The Number can also appear inside a Smart Meter Data CSV File, and often in the Filename of that File.

My NMI has only 10 Digits - the Portal wants 11

Consumer Electricity Bills often show only the first 10 Characters. The 11th Character is a Check Digit, and a Checksum Calculation derives it from the first 10. Type your 10 Characters into the NMI Checksum Digit Calculator to see the missing 11th Digit.

The Portal says my NMI is invalid

A Form that rejects an NMI has usually found a mismatch between the first 10 Characters and the 11th Check Digit. A single mistyped Character breaks the Check. Run the 11 Characters through the NMI Checksum Digit Calculator and compare the Result with the Number on your Bill.

Please take care with the first 10 Characters. An NMI can pass the Check and still belong to another Connection. If you enter 10 Characters that are not the ones for your Connection, the Check Digit you get back belongs to that other NMI.

I need the NMI for a Solar / Battery Pre-Approval

Your Electricity Distributor grants the Pre-Approval to connect Solar Power or a Battery, and the Application Form asks for all 11 Characters of the NMI. The same Form appears for other Electrical Works, such as the Addition or the Abolition of a Meter. Check the Number first, then lodge the Application with the Distributor named by the Lookup DNSP by NMI Tool .

I move in and the Retailer asks for the NMI

A new Electricity Retailer asks for the full 11 Characters to confirm they connect the right Property. The NMI travels with the Connection, so the Number on the Bill left behind by the previous Occupant is the Number for that Address.

I want my Smart Meter Data from the Distributor's Web Portal

Your Electricity Distributor usually publishes a Web Portal that gives you your own 30 Minute Interval Data in AEMO NEM12 CSV Format. The NMI is the Key you log in with, and the Portal generally wants all 11 Characters. Find the Distributor from your NMI, then read How to Download / Access Your Smart Meter Data ...

A Solar Datalogger or Monitoring Portal asks for the NMI

Solar Datalogging Portals and Monitoring Portals use the NMI to tie their Records to your Electricity Connection. Enter the Number in full so that the Portal identifies the right Connection. Where your Paperwork carries only 10 Characters, the NMI Checksum Digit Calculator supplies the 11th.

Which Distributor does this NMI belong to ?

AEMO issues every NMI from a Block of Numbers, and allocates each Block to one Network. The first Characters of an NMI therefore identify the Network exactly, even on a Border Postcode. AEMO notes this is a Guide: in rare cases the Network for an NMI may have changed since Allocation. Type the first 10 Characters into the Lookup DNSP by NMI Tool for the Name and the Contact Details of that Distributor.

My Bill does not name the Distributor

Many Retailers' Bills show the NMI and leave the Distributor unnamed. Your Electricity Retailer sells you the Electricity and sends the Bill. Your Electricity Distributor owns the Poles and Wires, and restores the Supply when it fails. For the full List of Situations that call for the Distributor, read Lookup your DNSP ...

I have an NMI from a NEM12 File and no Bill

Energy Assessors and Solar Sales Consultants often receive a NEM12 CSV File with no Bill beside it. The NMI sits inside the File, and often in the Filename as well. Use it to identify the Network before you lodge a Pre-Approval, and check the Character Count before you paste it into a Portal Form. The Tools are Free for Personal or Commercial Use.

I live in an Apartment, a Shopping Centre or a Caravan Park

Sites like these often run an Embedded Network, and each Occupant holds a Child NMI within it. The Lookup DNSP by NMI Tool tells you when an NMI comes from an Embedded Network Block. Your first point of contact is then the Embedded Network Operator, such as the Body Corporate or the Site Manager.

My Gas Bill shows a different Number

The NMI identifies an Electricity Connection. Australian Gas Connections carry their own Identifier, called a MIRN in most States and a DPI in New South Wales and the ACT. To check that Number, use the MIRN and DPI Tools . Some Gas NMI Blocks do exist in AEMO's List, and the Lookup DNSP by NMI Tool says so when it recognises one.

Good to Know

  • The first 10 Characters identify the Connection Point. The 11th Character is a Check Digit, and a published Checksum Calculation derives it from the first 10. The NMI Checksum Digit Calculator runs that Calculation for you.
  • An NMI can pass the Check and still belong to another Electricity Connection. Please enter the first 10 Characters exactly as your Bill prints them.
  • Numeric NMIs (e.g. 6102...) and Alpha-Numeric NMIs (e.g. VAAA..., NGGG..., QB...) both exist, and both Tools accept either Form.
  • The Lookup DNSP by NMI Tool reads AEMO's published NMI Allocation List, which maps each Block of Numbers to one Network (the Tool shows the Version). AEMO notes this is a Guide: in rare cases the Network for an NMI may have changed since Allocation.
  • Some NMIs are not Distribution Network Numbers. The Lookup DNSP by NMI Tool explains the reason in Plain Words. It may be a Transmission Network (TNSP) Connection, a Gas NMI, an Embedded Network Child NMI (Apartment Blocks, Shopping Centres, Caravan Parks), or an AEMO Reserved Block.
  • The Lookup DNSP by NMI Tool needs only 10 Characters. The 11th Check Digit is optional there.
